Makor Chayim

The Hebrew phrase Makor Chayim (מְקוֹר חַיִּים, pronunciation: mah-KOR kha-YEEM) means “Fountain of Life” or “Source of Life.” The word makor refers to a spring or fountain from which water continually flows, while chayim means life. For people living in biblical Israel,

this was not merely a poetic image. In a land where water was precious, a reliable spring meant survival. Families settled near it, shepherds depended on it, and entire communities were sustained by it. Without a source of fresh water, life quickly became difficult.

 

It is against this backdrop that David declares in the Psalms: “For with You is the fountain of

life; in Your light we see light.” Psalm 36:9

 

David understood that God is not simply the giver of blessings but the source from which every blessing flows. Strength, wisdom, peace, hope, and life itself are found in Him. Just as a spring continually supplies fresh water, the Lord continually supplies what His people need.

 

This theme runs throughout the Scriptures. When Israel drifted from the Lord, God spoke through the prophet Jeremiah, saying: “My people have committed two sins: They have

forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns

that cannot hold water” Jeremiah 2:13

 

The tragedy was not merely that the people had sinned; it was that they had abandoned the source. Instead of drawing life from God, they sought satisfaction elsewhere and discovered that everything they trusted eventually left them empty.

The same struggle exists today. It is easy to believe that peace will come through better circumstances, greater security, financial stability, or carefully arranged plans. Yet sooner or

later, we discover that these things cannot sustain the soul. They were never meant to be our

source. The human heart was created to find its life in God.

​

This is why the words of Yeshua carry such weight. During the Feast of Tabernacles, as people remembered God’s provision in the wilderness and celebrated His gift of water, Yeshua stood before the crowd and proclaimed, “Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of

living water will flow from within them” John 7:38

 

In that moment, He revealed Himself as the fulfillment of what the Makor Chayim had always pointed toward. The fountain David celebrated and the living water Jeremiah spoke about are found in Him. Through faith in Yeshua and the work of the Holy Spirit, God’s life is not only

In naming this Small Group, I came across the word makor, or maqor, which means "source" in Hebrew. "I get it" I thought, "He is the source of living water." So I found a picture of running water and bam, this group has a brand. Right? But in more research I came across the  above article and I was stunned. Using makor as the group name pales in comparison with using Makor Chayim. This represents what the Father put into my heart so much better and I am excited for the things to come in this group.
